2022 is certainly a great year for being two even when you're not aware that this is a year that the twos rule. On an adult front, that might not be as exciting as it sounds. Having a house full of two year olds isn't always as wonderful as you might expect. Two hasn't been labelled as one of a kid's more troublesome years for nothing.
At two years of age kids love to be constantly on the go and unless they're totally engaged in something then sitting still for more than five minutes is practically impossible. One of the secrets of hosting a successful birthday party for two year old toddlers is keeping them busy. You can do that in several different ways. Simple activities that keep them focused or on the move and classic party games work well. Skip feeding them anything, apart from the birthday cake, with too much sugar and you'll have a winning party plan all your toddler mummy friends will want to emulate.
Trending Party Ideas For A Two Year Old's Birthday
All of these second birthday party ideas include some kind of activity to keep the toddlers occupied. They'll keep you on your toes too so make sure you get plenty of rest in the days leading up to the party or you'll end up more exhausted when it's over than they do.
Disco Party
Hosting a disco party for a two year old is so much fun and simple too. All you need to do is clear a room of as much furniture as possible and make sure there's no sharp edges on whatever's left behind in case any of the toddlers take a tumble as they invariably do.
Make the room as dark as possible and have one or two portable disco balls on the go to create the right lighting. Disco balls are an economic investment, but if you can't get hold of them you can always use lots of strings of flashing Christmas lights in different colours to get a similar effect. LED bracelets and necklaces that glow in the dark are a bit hit too.
For a two year old's disco party the older pop hits are by far the best. Songs like YMCA , Agadoo or Macarena are perfect as you can show the toddlers how to do the dance steps. They might not get it right, but they'll have lots of fun trying. Give them time to do some free-style interpretation then sit them down on the impromptu dance floor while you replenish their energy levels with mini burgers or hot dogs.
Balloon Party
Hosting a balloon party for a two year old is guaranteed to generate squeals of excitement, but unless you get a machine to inflate the balloons or some help with plenty of hot air to spare, may leave you winded. Balloons make for a good indoor party theme. They're not so good for outdoors especially if it's windy as they could all end up in your neighbours garden.
Best thing to do is fill a room with as many as you can by tieing them together and stringing them from the ceiling and corners as well as leaving plenty of them floating around on the floor. A balloon arch looks cool too. Let the kids loose to throw, kick, pop and do whatever comes into their heads until they're exhausted. Be on the safe side though by removing the remnants of any that burst so none of the toddlers try to ingest them.
NB: You can take a balloon party up a notch by hiring an entertainer to make balloon animals. The kids love them and it gives them something to take home at the end of the party.
Teddy Bears Picnic
A teddy bears picnic is a super sweet second birthday party theme that doesn't take a great deal of organising. Asking all the invited guests to bring along their favourite teddy is a good idea as it gives the shyer little ones more confidence having something familiar in hand.
You can hold this party inside or outside depending on what space you have available in the house or garden. It's a good theme to keep in mind if the weather has been changeable as you can easily move it from one location to the other without too much hassle.
Spread out enough blankets or large tablecloths on the floor or lawn to allow all the guests, and their teddies, to sit down. You can set a place for each child with teddy bear decorated paper plates and cups and place food like min-rolls and sandwiches, sausage rolls, and basically any finger food that will tempt a two year old, in the middle. You can even use picnic baskets if you want to. If you're not sure the picnic food will survive the onslaught of so many little ones, another alternative is to prepare an individual plate for each guest then hand it to them when they're sitting down.
Great activities for a teddy bears picnic party are classics like statues and pass the teddy rather than pass the parcel.
NB: You can easily convert this idea into a doll’s tea party for girls or an action man party for boys.
Farm Party
Two year olds love this farm birthday party theme and you can make it really special without a great deal of effort. No, we're not suggesting you fill your living room with bales of straw, although they do work well if you're holding the party outdoors.
You can create super pens for inflatable farm animals with folding packing boxes made from plastic mesh. If you don't have room for many of those, try making a fake barn frontage from a cardboard box as the main wall decoration and use mini plastic farm animal figures instead.
Holding a farm party gives you a good excuse to keep the food healthy too as you can serve vegetables like carrots and celery cut into sticks alongside a variety of hummus dips. There's one song that just has to be sung at a farm party and that is of course, Old McDonald Had A Farm, so get practising your animal impressions.
NB: If you want to give the toddlers the surprise of their life, Fly by Fun can arrange for a petting farm to arrive during the event. It's a real thrill for the little ones and something they remember for a long time after.
Art Party
We'll be the first to admit that you need a space to hold an art party in where any spillage or accidental daubing won't do any damage. If you have an area like that then art is a fantastic theme for a child's second birthday party.
Painting activities are best done on the ground and with the budding artists suitably covered with smocks or extra large t-shirts you don't mind throwing away after. Finger painting is messy, but super fun and if you can afford to budget for a small canvas for each guest rather than paper they'll have an original and lasting masterpiece to take home with them.
As well as fingerpainting, you can also try spud painting by cutting shapes on potato halves beforehand. Keep it to simple designs like squares, circles and triangles or if you have good knife skills then cut out the number two. If you have a suitable wall you can cover it from the floor up to above the reach of the kids with paper and let them become graffiti artists for the day. Just be ready with the wet wipes because you're going to need them.
Bubble Party
Having a paddling pool at a party when you've got lots of kids over is just too risky to be practical, but if you're hoping to have an outdoor party for your little one's second birthday party, bubbles are a winner every time and they're safe.
With three or four cheap bubble machines you'll have a non-stop supply of bubbles for the kids to run around after, catch and burst. There are also lots of different kiddies toys perfect for toddlers like mini lawnmowers, bubble pistols and bubble wands, with which they can generate even more bubbles. If you want bubbles with the wow factor at the party then consider hiring our giant bubble artist and they'll create a bubble spectacular that will leave even you oohing with amazement.
Monkey Party
Monkey parties for toddlers are one of the trending themes for 2022. That's not surprising considering most two year olds can definitely be little monkeys on occasion and pretty loveable with it too.
There are several ways to hold a kiddy's monkey party and it rally depends on your personal taste as to which you choose. You can go down the cartoon-style monkey road which is more colourful than if you go for the realistic monkey theme.
For the decorations for a cartoon-style monkey party, monkey face masks make for great, and economical, wall decorations if you choose a couple of bright colours to combine them with and stick to those same colours for everything else such as napkins and plates.
If you decide to go down the jungle root you can make palm trees out of balloons and if you're adept at balloon twisting even make balloon monkeys to hang from them. If you're not into balloon twisting, soft toys are just as good.
The monkey party theme is even more fun if you have a monkey onesie for each of the guests and serve up food like bananas, apples and pears with a chocolate dip. Our advice is to skip the peanuts until the kids get older unless you're an expert at the Heimlich manoeuvre which is something you really don't want to have to find out in the middle of a party.
Star Party
Every little one who's about to turn two deserves to be a star for the day and you can make them one by throwing them a star party. No, a two year old isn't going to understand the complexities of astrology and the universe, unless they're a reincarnated Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking, but they will know what a star shape is.
This is a theme that you can do easily enough on even the tightest of party budgets if you prepare in advance. All you have to do is make as many cut out stars as you possibly can and decorate one room with them. You can make them from glow in the dark paper or regular card covered in various shades of glitter. Hang them from the ceiling and stick them to the walls and make everything, even the cakes, cookies and sandwiches in star shapes.
This is one party theme that sparkles even more if you have the little one's cheeks facepainted with glittery stars. If you don't have time to make all the stars yourselves, a great alternative is a couple of kiddy's night light projectors in a darkened room. It has the wow factor, but don't be surprised if the guests all fall asleep after ten minutes.
NB: You can adapt this idea to an underwater party theme by using fake seaweed and starfish instead of galactic ones.
